A
young man (Matt Dalpiaz) has recurring nightmares
about being savaged by large-breasted witches...
An unabashed
softcore quickie, The Witches
Of Breastwick is a lot of fun if approached
on that level. The story is slight and trivial,
but one would have to be delusional to imagine
that anybody is approaching this as high art.
The setup allows for plenty of softcore groping,
and that is, ultimately, the film's raison
d'etre.
Fortunately,
the performers are attractive, even if they fumble
a bit where dialogue is concerned, and director
H.R. Blueberry, reportedly a pseudonym for producer
Jim Wynorski (Chopping Mall,
Hard To Die) but
also credited as the director of such films as
the Busty Cop series, keeps things moving
at a decent pace. The various interludes are handled
fairly well Blueberry
seems to understand his audience and doesn't bog
things down with too much artsy pretension. The
performers enter into the proceedings with proper
enthusiasm, although the lesbian sequences lack
conviction while
one is hard pressed to complain about a group
of beautiful, top-heavy actresses pawing at each
other, it nevertheless helps the fantasy if they
appear to be into what they are doing. More satisfactory
are the various boy/girl scenes
in particular, the scenes between Matt Dalpiaz
(who should really change his middle name to "Lucky
Bastard") and stunning brunette Taimie Hannum,
and a later scene with adult film star Stormy
Daniels (aka Stormy; her credits everything from
All Anal and Dripping
Wet Sex 4 to the mainstream hit The
40 Year Old Virgin), are particularly noteworthy.
In addition to sultry Hannum, the real standout
in terms of the actresses would have to be Monique
Parent, a stunning redhead previously featured
as the Countess in Jess Franco's fun Tender
Flesh. Sexy blonde Jody Moore, herself no
stranger to the adult video scene, only has one
scene, alas, but she gets to perform a very steamy
striptease.
Beyond
the sex scenes, there's not a lot of interest
in terms of the plot. The ending, in particular,
feels rushed and unsatisfactory. The horror elements
are handled much too frivolously to be effective,
and there's not much to speak of in terms of suspense
quite honestly, its hard to really worry for
our hero's safety when his fate rests in the hands
of the hottest practitioners of the occult imaginable;
whether he lives or dies, at least he gets to
have some fun along the way! It may not exactly
be high art, but it does make for stimulating
entertainment and on that level, The
Witches Of Breastwick is worth a look for
any card-carrying smut-o-phile, regardless of
their feelings towards the horror genre.

Seduction Cinema's release
of The Witches Of Breastwick
is most satisfactory. The 1.78/16x9 image looks
very good. Shot on digital video, it has crisp
colors and sharp detail. Some of the location
photography is actually rather striking, and the
DVD does a good job of presenting this. The stereo
soundtrack is clear and well defined; the mostly
canned music score and dialogue come through well,
as do all the requisite moans and groans. Extras
include a commentary with director Blueberry and
ultra-busty starlet Glori-Anne Gilbert, which
is both entertaining and informative; it's interesting
to hear the actress discussing the pros and cons
of performing sex scenes with men as well as women
(she's not so fond of the latter, it seems
sorry, fellas). A bonus feature, Vampire
Call Girls, featuring Gilbert in a mostly
unclothed role is pretty disposable. More interesting
is a vintage 'stag' movie featuring a Marilyn
Monroe look-alike stripping on her bed. Trailers
for other SC releases round out the package.
