| Two
hapless Americans (Roger Caine and Zebedy Colt) find themselves
stranded in Germany; with little money and even less common sense
between the two of them, they nevertheless manage to score ample
fraulein action... |
|
Zebedy
Colt found fame of a kind in the 1970s as the most noteworthy
comic performer in the sex film industry. Unlike many of his contemporaries,
Colt could deliver a line with some conviction — and he was actually
amusing for all the right reasons. In addition to performing in
many XXX romps of the period, he branched out into directing as
well. Playgirls of Munich was one
of two films he did in Europe for sex film director Navred Reef,
and it remains an agreeable — if slightly over-padded — combination
of travelogue, mirth, and fornication. |
|
Of
the female cast, little is known. However, just by going with
what's on screen, the actresses assembled are attractive and
eager to please. The locales are interesting as well, ranging
from dinky hotel rooms to a psychedelic discotheque to a memorably
wet encounter in an indoor swimming pool — here's hoping chlorine
was liberally applied afterwards! Tighter editing would have
been appreciated during most of the encounters, and Reef's coverage
isn't always the most creative (lots of typical gynecological
inserts abound, if you'll pardon the expression), but there's
something inherently surreal about sex scenes scored to the
not-so-soothing strains of German oompah music. (For what it's
worth, it should be noted that a tune by Black Sabbath originally
accompanied one scene, but it had to be replaced on video for
rights purposes.)

Colt
and his costar, Roger Caine, carry the day fairly well. Colt has
a number of amusing moments, especially his ill-fated attempts
at bussing tables, and Caine does fairly well, too. If Caine looks
familiar, by the way, there's good reason: he appeared (using
the name Al Levetsky) as one of the victims in George A. Romero's
masterpiece, Martin (1975). Colt
and Caine make for an Abbott and Costello-style pair of nitwits,
though neither really functions as much in the way of brains in
the partnership. Both performers enter gamely into the spirit
of the proceedings, however, and appear to be enjoying the natural
beauty of the, er, scenery. |
|
Playgirls
of Munich
isn't among the finest XXX films of the period, but it's an unassuming
and sometimes amusing diversion that should please fans of the
genre. |

| After
Hours Cinema brings Playgirls of Munich
to DVD in a "remastered" widescreen edition. The 1.78/16x9
transfer appears to be fully uncut, barring some missing frames
due to print damage. Colors are a bit washed out and print damage
abounds —
sometimes, in fact, looking slightly manufactured, as if to better
recapture the "grindhouse" feel. The picture is as sharp as the
source materials will allow, and the film is watchable throughout.
The mono English soundtrack suffers from limitations of the recording
and post synching, but it's in decent enough shape —
the Muzak comes through loud and clear. |
|
The
2-disc set includes a second DVD of 8mm "Euro Loops"
from German porn films of the era. Trailers for other After Hours
product are also included, as is a booklet by James Hollenbaugh.
